City Way Sports Therapists uncover the lesser known facts about Sports Massage Treatments

6 things you would only know if you had a sports massage

No pain. No gain

If you think you are in for a soft massage with beautifully smelling esential oils and wave music playing - then think again. A sports massage is not designed to be a “Cosmetic” or “chill out” treatment and many are put off as they think it’s going to be painful and uncomfortable. However, the focused massage of soft tissue, both longitudinally and laterally, will improve muscular mobility and can correct imbalances, as well as releasing accumulated tensions from the muscles.

Help ease muscle soreness

Muscle tightness, soreness and discomfort is common in many people after exercise or training - especially this time of year with Marathons. However the pumping and squeezing techniques used during a sports massage will encourage blood and lymph to flow through the body and help prevent muscle fatigue.

It actually can be relaxing

It’s true. Muscles relax through heat generated, circulation and stretching. Sports massage stimulates the Mechanoreceptors, which sense touch, pressure, tissue length and warmth, to lift the mood and de-stress the body.

You regret not having had a sports massage more regularly

We find that a sports massage is normally something most of our patients only have when needed. However, regular massage around your training or exercise program can help reduce the chance of injury or discomfort. A sports massage should be part of your long term wellbeing plan.

Speak up - please!

Our Sports Massage therapists will apply the pressure suitable for you and your requirements. If the pressure is too much for you, speak up and tell your therapist so that they can adapt the treatment to suit. This treatment has to be beneficial BUT it also has to be comfortable. Alternatively you might find that you can tolerate more pressure - so again please let your therapist know.

It’s fine to be naked

Massage therapists are trained professionals and will tell our patients to “undress to the point of where you feel comfortable,". Therapists will keep you covered with towels or sheets. Some of you may feel more comfortable clothed, however remember that being undressed can actually lead to a more beneficial appointment.
