MSK Ultrasound in Medway
The use and popularity of ultrasound imaging is becoming extremely popular in the management of musculoskeletal problems and there are a number of reasons for this.
Ultrasound imaging is the non-invasive use of sound-waves to produce images of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints throughout the body to enable diagnosis and treatment of all forms of sprains, strains, tears, and other soft tissue conditions.
Ultrasound is unique in that scanning occurs in real-time making it possible to discuss reproduction of symptoms with the patient, and to view dynamic images of the structures under examination.
What are the benefits of MSK Ultrasound?
Real-time imaging
-
MSK ultrasound lets us see structures as they move (muscles, tendons, joints).
-
This is especially useful for diagnosing issues that only appear during motion, like tendon snapping or joint instability.
No radiation
-
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound uses sound waves.
-
This makes it safe for repeated use, including for children and pregnant patients.
Quick and convenient
-
Scans are typically fast and can be done in-clinic.
-
No need for large machines or long wait times like with MRI.
Cost-effective
-
Generally cheaper than MRI or CT scans, making it more accessible.
Excellent for soft tissues
-
Particularly good at visualising: Tendons (e.g., tears, inflammation); Ligaments; Muscles; Bursae
-
Often better than X-ray for these structures.
Dynamic comparison
-
We can compare the injured side with the normal side immediately, which helps with diagnosis.
Image-guided procedures
-
Used to guide injections (e.g., steroids, PRP) with high accuracy.
-
Improves safety and effectiveness by ensuring the needle is placed exactly where needed.
Detects fluid and inflammation
-
Very sensitive for spotting: Joint effusions (fluid); Synovitis (inflammation); Cysts
MSK Ultrasound Guided Injections
Only a minority of injections performed for musculoskeletal problems are done accurately. For this reason injections performed under ultrasound imaging are becoming more popular and is the approach that we use in our clinic for some specific injections that have been more rigorously researched.
Ultrasound at City Way Health can be carried out by our Practitioner Stefano.
In addition we are delighted to work with Kent Musculoskeletal Clinic to offer this service at City Way Health. For further information please contact Kent MSK Clinic Directly
