Our Rochester Osteopaths look at how you can ensure your mattress does not cause you poor back or neck pain

We look at how your mattress is linked to poor sleep and ultimately how you can prevent this from leading to back, neck or wrist pain

Fact: Poor sleep affects back and neck pain.

Research suggests that of those experiencing back pain, around 41% of women and 36% of men said that their back pain could be brought on by sleep.

Fact: Poor quality mattress is one of the biggest factors affecting poor sleep

The following factors may determine if you need to purchase a new mattress:

  • Your mattress should not be too soft or too hard - if you are lying on your side, your spine should be parallel to the mattress and should not sag or bow
  • Can you feel the springs through the mattress? It may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who ignore this.
  • Is your bed more that 10 years old? If so, chances are you need to look at replacing it. Generally mattresses should be replaced after 7 years, so it's worth checking the age of yours.
  • Are you getting a comfortable nights sleep? If not, then a common reason may be that your mattress is worm and needs replacing. It's certainly worth replacing your mattress to determine if this is the main cause.
  • In addition - your pillow should not be too high or too low so that your neck is a continuation of your straight spine
